Cardiopulmonary Department

The Cardiopulmonary Department provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests to assess heart and lung health.  Our services include Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) to evaluate lung capacity and efficiency, as well as a Sleep Lab for diagnosing sleep disorders.  We offer Holter Monitors for continuous heart rhythm monitoring and advanced imaging tests such as Echocardiograms, Stress Echocardiograms, and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms to assess cardiac function.  Additionally, we perform Venous and Carotid Ultrasounds, Arterial Flow Studies, and other vascular assessments to detect circulation issues. Pulmonary Function Test
A series of non-invasive tests that evaluate how well your lungs are working. These tests measure lung volume, capacity, airflow, and gas exchange to help diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung disorders. We perform PFTs to assist physicians in determining the best course of treatment for patients experiencing breathing difficulties.
Sleep Lab
Dr. Geoffrey Lipscomb, Sleep Facility Director, boarded in Family and Sleep Medicine, provides all professional interpretations and directs all treatment. Dr. Lipscomb provides patients the convenience of a local Sleep Clinic for timely appointments, carrier required assessments, supply orders, and compliance needs. Monroe County Hospital’s Sleep Center is local, fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and immediately available to assess, test, and treat your referrals. We provide the same level of testing and treatment offered in any metropolitan based program – without the 3 month wait to see a specialist.
In-Lab Testing (NPSG)
This test is a fully attended, comprehensive study using a CMS Level 1 device. Depending on the results of the diagnostic test, a second night titration, a split night or daytime Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) may be required to complete the diagnostic process.
In-Home Testing (HST)
Some insurance providers require a Home Sleep Study as a cheaper alternative than In Lab study and often Patients prefer HST to an In Lab visit. While HST is a less expensive and more convenient option, HST does not provide the in-depth assessment of an In Lab Sleep Study and will not be appropriate in every case. We will work with your Patient and your Carrier to insure both cost and diagnostic results are considered.
Holter Monitors
Portable devices used to continuously record the heart's electrical activity over an extended period, typically 24 to 48 hours or longer. We provide Holter monitoring to help detect irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) that may not appear during a standard ECG. This non-invasive test allows physicians to evaluate heart function during daily activities, helping diagnose conditions such as palpitations, dizziness, and unexplained fainting.
Echocardiograms
A non-invasive ultrasound test that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the heart's structure and function. We perform echocardiograms to evaluate heart size, pumping strength, valve function, and blood flow. This test helps diagnose heart conditions such as heart failure, valve disorders, and congenital heart defects.
Stress Echocardiogram
A specialized ultrasound test that evaluates how well the heart functions under physical stress. We perform stress echocardiograms to assess blood flow, detect coronary artery disease, and evaluate heart function during exertion. The test involves taking ultrasound images of the heart before and after exercise, typically on a treadmill or stationary bike.
Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram
For patients unable to exercise, a medication-induced stress test may be used. We perform this test by administering dobutamine, a medication that stimulates the heart to beat faster and stronger, mimicking the effects of physical exercise. Ultrasound images are taken before, during, and after the medication is given to evaluate blood flow, heart muscle function, and potential coronary artery disease.
Venous and Carotid Ultrasounds
Non-invasive imaging tests that use sound waves to evaluate blood flow and detect vascular conditions.
Venous Ultrasound
Is used to assess blood flow in the veins, typically in the legs, to diagnose deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or other circulation issues.
Carotid Ultrasound
Examines the carotid arteries in the neck to detect plaque buildup or narrowing (stenosis) that may increase the risk of stroke.
Arterial Flow Studies
Are non-invasive tests used to assess blood circulation in the arteries of the arms and legs. We perform these studies to evaluate conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), blockages, or reduced blood flow that may cause pain, numbness, or poor wound healing. Using ultrasound technology and blood pressure measurements at different points along the limbs, this test helps physicians diagnose vascular conditions and develop appropriate treatment plans to improve circulation and overall vascular health.
